How to Use a Movie in a Footnote

Footnotes are bibliographic notes positioned at the bottom of each page. The citation guidelines laid out by the Chicago Manual of Style employ footnoting to provide bibliographic information for sources that are quoted or paraphrased within the text, including non-text sources such as film. If you need to cite a movie in a footnote, you must arrange the information in a specific manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a superscripted Arabic numeral within the text directly after quoting or paraphrasing from a film.

    • 2

Begin your footnote with the same number that you inserted into the text, followed by a period. For example:

      2.

    • 3

List the title of the film in italics, followed by a comma. For example:

      2. Ravenous,

    • 4

List the name of the director in the following format:

      2. Ravenous, directed by Antonia Bird

    • 5

List the original year of release, city, state, studio and year of DVD release in parentheses. Punctuate as follows:

      2. Ravenous, directed by Antonia Bird (1999; Los Angeles, CA: Fox 2000 Pictures, 2001),

    • 6

Conclude your citation with the format of release, followed by a period. Your finished footnote entry should appear as follows:

      2. Ravenous, directed by Antonia Bird (1999; Los Angeles, CA: Fox 2000 Pictures, 2001), DVD.
