How to Use the Eppendorf Pipette

The Eppendorf pipette is a pipetting device that is found commonly in laboratories ranging from classroom chemistry labs to state-of-the-art research centers. These pipettes provide an ergonomic method for pipetting very accurate volumes of material during lab procedures. These devices are well known for their ability to be used with only one hand and their precision volume settings that allow for exact volumes of material to be extracted or added during an experiment.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the Eppendorf pipette in your dominant hand. The pipette should be oriented so that the volume meter is facing you and the finger guard faces away and over your index finger.

    • 2

Use your thumb to adjust the volume setting knob. This knob is placed directly above the volume meter and is turned left or right to adjust the amount of volume to be extracted.

    • 3

Insert the tip of the pipette into the material to be extracted.

    • 4

Press the plunger on the top portion of the pipette once to extract the set amount of volume. Depressing the plunger again will release the volume contained within the pipette.
