Attend a college or university that offers an associate's degree in Medical Technology. Many employers will also accept an associate's degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Science. The curriculum will teach students about laboratory equipment, how to manage labs and how to examine specimens. With an associate's degree in Medical Technology, many jobs can be obtained as a medical lab technician or students can continue their education to receive a bachelor's degree and become a medical technologist.
Obtain a certificate as a medical technician and begin entry-level work in the field. Certificates are not the same as a degree and some employers may not hire someone with only a certificate. Certificates take less time, and money, to obtain. Anyone who wants to be a medical technician without getting a college degree or furthering their career in medical technology could obtain a certificate. Some online colleges offer medical technician certificates but most do not include hands on work in a lab.
Apply for an entry-level job at a hospital. Many hospitals will hire potential technicians with the intention of paying for college, certification or even providing their own programs so that the employee gets the education they need as a medical technician. Sometimes, working in a hospital or lab for enough years will qualify someone for a position as a medical technician.
