How to Obtain a Teaching Degree

Obtaining a teaching degree is the first step in the path to becoming a teacher. The process of becoming a teacher can, however, vary by state. Some states require degrees in education to become a teacher, while others require that you obtain your degree in an area related to the subject you intend to teach. Obtaining a teaching degree typically takes four years, but some programs may take longer. Some teaching degrees can even be obtained online through distance education.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply to colleges and universities of interest to you. Ideally they should be schools that offer education degrees unless you live in a state where teachers obtain bachelor's degrees in the subjects they intend to teach, rather than an education degree.

    • 2

Complete your general education coursework. These are the courses you will take during your first two years of your education. These are designed to provide you with a well-rounded education and serve as foundational courses for future study. Most schools require that you complete coursework in areas like psychology and sociology, history, math, science, communication, foreign languages and English literature and composition.

    • 3

Complete your teacher education coursework. This coursework is usually taken during your last two years of undergraduate studies. The number of required courses will vary by college, but you can expect to complete at least 30 credit hours in teacher education courses that cover areas like teaching methods and theory, educational psychology, curriculum development and other areas directly related to the work you will do as a teacher.

    • 4

Take and complete your subject area courses that are required to obtain certification in the field you will be teaching. Elementary school teachers, for example, take courses in early childhood development, teaching curriculum for elementary-aged children and other areas directly related to teaching young children. For secondary education, you will be required to complete courses in the subject you intend to teach, whether it be history, science, math, English or another area.

    • 5

Complete your student-teaching requirements. Most teaching degrees have a student-teaching requirement that must be completed prior to graduation. Student teaching involves working in an actual classroom setting as a teaching intern under the direction of a certified teacher. The number of hours spent in student teaching can vary from state to state based on whatever is required by the state's education department. Once these requirements have been met, you can complete your teaching degree. There may be additional certification requirements to complete or tests to take before you are allowed to teach.
