Ontario's Seneca College offers three courses related to firefighting: firefighting, pre-service education and training; fire protection engineering technician; and fire protection engineering technology. The college's two firefighting engineering programs allow students to work with modern firefighting equipment and leading professionals in the industry. The pre-service education and training program is endorsed by the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs. At the end of the course, graduates will receive an Ontario college certificate and are eligible to write the provincial firefighting test.
Lakeland College in Alberta offers several firefighting courses, including programs aimed at students who want to pursue careers in the industrial firefighting field or at a municipal fire service. Students enrolled in the firefighter professional qualifications program will receiving hands-on training during the 12-week program as well as a certificate at graduation. Students can also enroll in programs that focus on fighting fires in industrial environments, forests and airport settings.
The Justice Institute of British Columbia offers several programs within its fire and safety division, including Fire Officer 1. This six-course program teaches students about administration, leadership and supervision, important qualities that are needed when working as a firefighter. Graduates of the program are also trained about how to make calculated decisions when working in challenging settings. Graduates of this program can build upon their education by enrolling in additional fire service programs that the Institute offers.
The Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland offers a two-semester fire rescue program, which includes an eight-week work term. Some of the requirements applicants need when applying to the program include possessing a high school diploma and passing a medical fitness test. Students in the program will study and work alongside accredited teachers and current firefighters. Students will also be taught professional guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association.
