APA Format Writing Tutorial

Papers written for the psychology, political science, social sciences, sociology, journalism education or public health usually refer to the style guidelines found in the "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" or APA. APA documentation requires parenthetical citations within the text and a final listing of all references cited in the paper. Each of the parenthetical citations must be matched to an entry in an alphabetized reference list and cited in the text of your paper. While an instructor may have a special requirement, the basic guidelines consist of six parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Title Page. On the first page, include your paper's title, your name and your institution's name on three separate lines. Double-space and center the lines beginning approximately one-third of the way down from the top of the page.

    • 2

Abstract. On the second page, include a 100 to 150-word paragraph summarizing your paper. Place the title "Abstract" approximately one inch from the top of the page and center it.

    • 3

Body. The body of the paper begins on the third page. All four sides of each page should contain a one-inch margin. A justified right margin and end-of-line hyphens are acceptable. Double-space your entire paper, unless you instructor allows single spacing for tables, titles or captions. Main headings should be centered, using standard uppercase and lowercase text. Place your short title and the page number at the upper-right margin of all pages beginning with the title page. The title should be either just above or five spaces to the left of the page number.

    • 4

Citations. Within your paper, give credit for others' ideas by including the author and year in a citation. For quotations, add the page number of the citation. If quotations run 40 words or more, type it in block style, five spaces in from the left margin, with all lines flush left along that new margin. Indent the first line of the second and later paragraphs another five spaces if it is more than one paragraph of citations.

    • 5

References. Place full citations from all sources in an alphabetized list at the end of the paper. Place the title "References" approximately one inch from the top of the page and center it.

    • 6

Appendix. If your instructor requires it, place your charts, tables and graphs in an appendix. Otherwise, include them within the body of your paper.
