ABA Certified Legal Studies Degrees

The American Bar Association (ABA) provides accreditation for legal studies programs throughout the United States. The ABA has, as of 2011, accredited 200 law schools within the United States. One of those schools, the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's School, offers an advanced course. The remaining 199 schools offer the J.D. Degree, also known as the first degree in law, as described at the ABA website.
  1. Rankings

    • Other than the accreditation, the ABA does not rate the schools, with the exception of provisional acceptance in some instances. As of January 2011, five of the ABA schools have a provisional acceptance status.

    Provisional Acceptance

    • The five law schools with provisional ABA acceptance include: Charleston School of Law, Charlotte School of Law, Earle Mack College of Law at Drexel University, Elon University School of Law, and University of La Verne College of Law.

    East

    • Some ABA accredited schools in the Eastern United States include: Rutgers University in New Jersey; Boston College in Boston Massachusetts; The University of Connecticut in Hartford, Connecticut; University of Maine School of Law in Portland, Maine; University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland; Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee; New York Law School in New York City; New York University School of Law in New York City; University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts; The University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville, Tennessee; and University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia.

    California

    • The University of California has ABA accredited law programs based at the Berkeley, Davis, Hastings, and Los Angeles campuses. Other ABA accredited law degree programs in California include Stanford Law School at Stanford University in Stanford, California and California Western School of Law in San Diego, California.

    West

    • ABA accredited schools in the western United States include: the James E. Rogers College of Law at University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona; The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona; Colorado Law at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado; Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah; University of Montana School of Law in Missoula, Montana; University of New Mexico School of Law in Albequerque, New Mexico; Texas Wesleyan School of Law in Fort Worth, Texas; and Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock, Texas.

    Non-Contiguous United States

    • Outside the contiguous United States the The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hawaii offers and ABA accredited law school program. Other ABA accredited J.D. Degree programs outside the continental United States include the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico and the University of Puerto Rico School of Law both in Puerto Rico.
