Rutgers College Requirements

Rutgers University was founded as Queens College in 1766. Located in Newark, New Jersey, Rutgers is the eighth oldest university in the United States and is considered the birth place of college football. There are approximately 56,800 students from all 50 states and 125 countries, including 42,300 undergraduates and 14,500 graduate students in the 2010 academic year. Requirements for admission and graduation are dependent on the faculty and level of degree sought.
  1. Undergraduate

    • Undergraduate programs at Rutgers include a variety of majors from which to choose including arts and sciences, business, communication, info tech and journalism, pharmacy, engineering and more. Requirements for admission take more into consideration than your previous grade average and SAT scores. According to Rutgers, they conduct a "holistic review" of high school performance, cumulative rank, grade-point averages and grade trends, completion of required entrance subjects, strength of academic program, evidenced by the number of academic, honors, or advanced placement courses completed, SAT and/or ACT scores, as well as English proficiency results. Additionally, Rutgers considers students who have a solid community service history, involvement in extracurricular activities and sports, honors or awards, family obligations and special talents.

    School of Arts & Sciences College Degree Requirements

    • Students must complete required coursework with a minimum of 120 credit hours to graduate with an arts and sciences college degree. Student must complete 01:355:101 expository writing, and one course beyond that of at least three credit hours with a strong writing component. Students must complete two three-credit hour courses in quantitative skills, selecting from a list of available mathematics classes with an additional three-credit hours selected from a list of acceptable electives ranging from anthropology to urban studies. Students must take two three-credit hour courses each in natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. Finally, students must three credit hours about the non-western world to be selected from a list supplied to students.

    School of Arts and Science Degree

    • To qualify for a liberal arts degree from Rutgers, students must complete the required 120 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Students are required to complete six credit hours of Writing, six credit hours of quantitative reasoning, six credit hours of natural science, 12 credit hours of social science, three credit hours of diversity and three credit hours of global awareness. Students in most programs are required to declare a major and minor. This requirement is waived for students transferring to specialty programs such as engineering, pharmacy or business.

    Requirement for Grad Studies Admission

    • In the 2010/2011 Academic year there are over a 100 graduate programs from which to choose at Rutgers University. The requirements for entry to each of these programs may vary slightly, with some weighing work or life experience in addition to academics. Generally, students must have completed an undergraduate honors degree or equivalent and provide proof of this on application. Transcripts are required. Graduate studies requires completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE General Test), although for some programs they may accept completion of the General Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Finally, they require a personal statement of less than 500 words. Some programs may require writing samples as well.
