Wind Farm Schools

As the United States continues its search for alternatives to fossil fuels, clean-energy sources are gaining more attention. In February 2011, the White House put four coastal state wind-energy projects on the fast track with the promise of $50 million in funding. A vocation in wind energy has become a viable choice for students looking for a career in cutting-edge energy technology, and there are several colleges that offer the opportunity.
  1. Redstone College

    • Redstone College, in Denver, Colorado, was established in 1965. It offers associate degrees in the fields of construction, industrial services, aviation and energy. Its associate of occupational studies in wind energy technology can be completed in 15 months. The program will prepare students to troubleshoot, service and repair wind turbines by providing technical and electrical knowledge with a strong background in wind turbine mechanical systems. With this degree, a student will be prepared for a career as a wind turbine machinist, wind energy specialist, wind field technician and wind power plant technician. The school's programs are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC), and its faculty and staff are all industry professionals.

    Mesalands Community College

    • Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari, New Mexico is a two-year school that prepares students for a technical career or to transfer to a four-year institution. It offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in wind energy technology. The school's North American Wind Research and Training Center boasts a state-of-the-art training facility. The 26,000-square-foot building contains electric and electromechanical laboratories, lecture hall, conference hall and a student lounge. Classes in the wind energy technology program include Introduction to Wind Technology, Wind Turbine Climbing and Safety, Wind Turbine Mechanical Systems and Wind Turbine Siting and Construction.

    Western Iowa Tech Community College

    • Western Iowa Tech's main campus is located in Sioux City, Iowa. It also has campuses in Cherokee and Denison, as well as Learning Centers in Le Mars and Mapleton. WITCC offers an array of programs such as nursing, automotive, carpentry and video game design, as well as wind energy technology. It offers an AAS degree for wind energy technician, a certificate program for wind site assessment specialist, and a diploma for wind turbine maintenance specialist. Classes include Introduction to Wind Energy, Industrial Electronics, Advance Wind Turbine System Control, as well as a wind turbine internship.

    Northeast Community College

    • Based in Norfolk, Nebraska, Northeast Community offers a variety of associate degree, diploma and certificate programs that range from accounting to nursing to journalism. It started its diploma program for wind energy study in 2009. An $86,000 Walmart Workforce Economic Opportunity Initiative and the American Association of Community Colleges Center for Workforce and Economic Development helped get the program off the ground. The wind energy course is a one-year, 41-credit program. Classes include Wind Energy Fundamentals, Wind Turbine Systems, Motor Control, Blueprint Reading and a cooperative internship. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits the programs.
