Decide whether you are simply interested in learning the techniques involved in a particular medium. It may be helpful for you to learn the process of wheel-thrown pottery if you work for an art gallery or to learn the history of theatre if you work for a performing arts organization. In this case, a two-year associate's degree in Fine Arts may satisfy your needs. Research local community colleges and tech schools to see whether they offer a fine arts program.

Consider enrolling in an associate's degree program, even if you would like to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at a four-year institution. Most two-year schools have limited offerings in Fine Arts, but beginning your studies here may be an economical solution to paying higher tuition at a four-year school. Before starting on this track, however, talk to a guidance counselor at the two-year school to see what credits typically transfer. The bulk of that decision will rest with the four-year school, so if you already know where you would like to study, speak with that school's counselors.

Research schools that offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree if you are considering becoming a professional artist, writer or performer. Public and private colleges will vary as to whether they offer a BFA, or simply a Bachelor of Arts in these fields. Usually BA programs are not as rigorous or in-depth as BFA programs. Any institution that focuses on fine arts education, such as a college dedicated to the study of dance, will have a BFA track. A four-year degree in Fine Arts is also beneficial to those who those wanting to work in art-related fields, such as gallery/museum management, art education and commercial art.

Apply to a Master of Fine Arts program if you are serious about being a professional artist, or would like to be able to teach your discipline as a college professor. Some programs will require you to have a BFA in order to apply, while others will accept a BA and an outstanding portfolio. Look at public, private and specialized colleges and universities for these programs. Because of the focus of fine art study at the master's level, a visit to the department to meet the faculty and get a feel for what methods they teach is essential. The length of these programs can vary from two to five years. The majority of fine arts degrees are terminal at the level of master's, giving you the advantage of being able to teach at the college level, though not necessarily secondary school.

Complete the coursework involved with your selected degree program. The amount of core non-art classes will vary. Most BFA and MFA programs will require you to select a medium concentration, in which a specific number of credits will be required to graduate. In order to complete your degree, at least one semester of a thesis class will also be required; this is typically taken during your last semester. Your degree may require a written thesis, or a final show of artwork or performance in lieu of a paper. Upon completion of a thesis, you will be rewarded a degree.
