How to Type Up a Science Project

Science remains a prerequisite for advanced careers in many subjects including engineering, medicine, and quantitative finance. Science is normally taught in a proactive way whereby the students do a number of experiments to learn the fundamentals. Typically towards the end of the year, students are asked to carry out a science project whereby they design an experiment and subsequently write a report detailing the experiment. The format of these reports is almost universal and will typically contain an abstract, introduction, method, results and conclusion.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the abstract. The abstract is a short outline of the experiment that has been carried out. Ideally, the abstract should be about 75 to 150 words, and do not exceed one double-spaced typewritten page (about 200 to 300 words. Include a short introduction, the methods used, the main results and the conclusions.

    • 2

Write the introduction. The introduction sets the context of the report and explains why the experiment is relevant. Do not include details about the experiment; these go in the methods section.

    • 3

Write the method. The method outlines the experimental procedure used in a great amount of detail. This section should be written in such a way that someone could reproduce the experiment after reading your description. Give details of the apparatus used and have a diagram of the experimental setup.

    • 4

Write the results section. Include tables and graphs of your data here. Ensure all graphs have labeled axes and a caption to describe its meaning. Supporting text should describe trends, features and any anomalies, but it should not draw any conclusions.

    • 5

Write the conclusions section. This section should reflect upon all results obtained in the experiment and draw some sensible conclusions. Compare the results to what was expected. If the results were not expected, explain possible reasons for this. Finally, its good practice to suggest some modifications to the experiment to make it better, and also describe possible future work.

    • 6

Write the references section. All books, papers, and websites should be cited.
