Fractions and proportions are two mathematical terms that are interconnected because they both deal with the relationships between parts to wholes. A fraction is written with a number on the top or left, called a "numerator." This number is followed by a division bar and number on bottom or to the right, which is known as a "denominator." Proportions, on the other hand, usually employ the use of a colon to show the relationship between two numbers. In algebra, the values of a fraction or proportion could be represented by letters such as "P," "K" and "V."
