Acquiring an associate degree in architectural building engineering technology prepares students for entry-level positions in the construction and architectural fields. After completing the program, graduates can find employment with building manufacturers, contractors, Realtors and various architectural and engineering companies. The associate degree is a basic foundation for further studies in the building services area. Coursework includes introduction to construction engineering, construction materials, project management, building performance and environmental systems. Students may also study the basics of structural engineering.
A bachelor's degree program involves coursework in advanced mathematics, along with basic computer programming and science, required for basic engineering and architecture. After completing the program, students have technical knowledge of structural systems, architectural design and how architecture and engineering are merged together to make a building fully functional and suitable for public health. To obtain a PhD in architectural engineering, students must already have a graduate degree in the field or a related major. According to Penn State's Department of Architectural Engineering, students must also pass a "PhD Candidacy Examination," which tests their understanding on all areas of the subject. After completing the PhD program, along with a dissertation, the graduate is eligible for positions in research and academia.
