The Schools for Organic Agriculture

Organic agriculture is a newly emerging force in the world food market; but many universities lack in programs addressing this new force. However, students can find a few great schools which teach organic, sustainable farming practices; either here in the United States, or further abroad.
  1. Pennsylvania State University

    • The first college in the United States to offer degrees in agriculture, Penn State offers a variety of opportunities for its students to experience organic agriculture. Its college of agricultural sciences offers three distinct courses in organic agriculture, which offer students both a history of organic farming and a hands-on approach to organic agriculture. Non-degree students can participate in Penn State's organic community garden, the site of both seminars and many students' final theses.

    Iowa State University

    • The mission of Iowa State University's organic agriculture program focuses on bringing sustainable organic practices to both students and farmers in the general public. Headed primarily by Associate Professor Dr. Kathleen Delate, the program offers courses for credit in addition to an organic research lab for theses. Non-students can participate by attending one of the yearly conferences or the bi-monthly seminars by established organic farmers. Located in the heart of United States farmland, Iowa State brings lots to the table for students interested in organic farming.

    University of Guelph

    • Located in Guelph, Ontario, the University of Guelph allows students to study organic agriculture while studying abroad. Guelph prepares students to engage in sustainable practices while producing nutritious food and fostering self-sufficiency. Guelph operates under the belief that the future of food production lies in the organic sector.

    Scottish Agricultural College

    • Students wishing to go even further from home can attend Scottish Agricultural College. Operating since 1986, Scottish Agricultural College, or SAC, promises students hands-on experiences in both model and working farms. SAC has campuses all across Scotland, including one in Edinburgh. Students interested in growing organic food and studying abroad can combine their interests by attending SAC.
