Distance Learning at Black Universities

The U.S. Department of Education defines a historically black college or university (HBCU) as an accredited institution founded before 1964 to provide education to black Americans. There are 105 HBCUs in the U.S., and though more than 40 of them have developed distance learning programs, only 19 institutions currently offer online associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
  1. Online Associate's Degrees

    • Only two HBCUs offer distance learning associate's degrees: Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and Virginia University of Lynchburg. Both online programs require students to complete 60 credit hours. Class participation includes email correspondence, discussion boards and chat rooms. Hampton University confers an associate of arts in general studies and an associate of science in business management.

    Online Bachelor's Degrees

    • Distance learning bachelor's degrees are offered by many HBCUs, including Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro; Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia; Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma; Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi; Howard University in Washington, D.C.; Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Georgia; and Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fort Valley State has one of the largest distance learning degree programs among the HBCUs, conferring bachelor's degrees in criminal justice, political science, psychology, technical and professional writing, and rehabilitation counseling and case management.

    Online Master's Degrees

    • Ten HBCUs offer distance learning master's degrees: Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida; Fayetteville State University; Kentucky State University in Frankfort; Langston University; North Carolina A&T State University; North Carolina Central University in Durham; Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas; Tennessee State University in Nashville; Texas Southern University in Houston; and Winston-Salem State University. Prairie View A&M University offers a 36-hour master of science in juvenile justice online program that educates students in the theoretical explanations of juvenile delinquency and examines the juvenile justice system in detail.

    Online Ph.D.s

    • Three HBCUs confer online doctorate degrees: Howard University, Morgan State University in Baltimore, and North Carolina A&T State University. Morgan State offers a community college leadership doctoral program that trains students for positions as professors and leaders. Students conduct research into the specific problems and issues faced by community colleges. The three-year online program provides students with 24-hour access to instruction, with the ability to complete assignments over a five-week, 35-day course structure that consists of three or four courses per semester.
