How to Calculate a Grade Point Average From an Indian System

Foreign students applying to schools in the United States must submit transcripts of classes attended and grades earned to their prospective colleges. Part of the application requires students to list the Grade Point Average (GPA) from each course. Because the grading system is different in India, students must convert their GPAs into the U.S. scale. If you are applying to American schools with grades from an Indian system, mention that your scores reflect conversion from the Indian system.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert scores from the Indian system into the US 4.0 GPA scale. Scores between 8 and 10 are equal to a 4.0 on the U.S. scale. Scores between 6 and 7 are equal to a 3.0 on the U.S. scale. Scores of between 3 and 5 are equal to a 2.0 on the U.S. scale. Finally, scores between 1 and 2 are equal to a 1.0 on the U.S. scale. For example, if you have three grades, 8, 6, and 3 in the Indian system, you have a 4, 3 and 2 on the U.S. scale.

    • 2

      Add the converted scores together. For example, 4 + 3 + 2 = 9.

    • 3

Divide the figure by the number of scores. For example 9 / 3 = 3. In this example, your GPA is a 3.0 in the U.S. scale.
