Classes to Take for Court Reporting

Court reporters are responsible for creating transcriptions in order to capture and preserve the spoken word in legal proceedings and other official events. Courses in court reporting are available in certificate programs, and graduates can gain licensing through the National Verbatim Reporters Association. Court reporters use a machine called a steno machine that has a specialized keypad to quickly and accurately record words.
  1. Machine Shorthand

    • A machine shorthand course teaches students how to use a steno machine and build transcription skills. Students learn shorthand theory and language through abbreviations, fingering techniques, machine practice, phrases and dictation notes. In order to complete transcription assignments, students use computerized software programs and complete court reporting tutorials.

    Court Reporting Computer Technology

    • A court reporting computer technology course focuses on the operation and maintenance of steno machines and other computer-aided transcription systems. Students develop an understanding of the computer functions for transcription production. One can also learn the intricacies of a steno machine and how to perform minor repairs.

    Court Reporting Procedures

    • Students enrolled in a court reporting procedures course learn about the role of the court reporter in a variety of legal settings, including trials, depositions, and administrative hearings. The course teaches students the procedural differences in these settings and when to interrupt judges, witnesses and lawyers for clarification.

    Court Reporting Practicum

    • Court reporting programs often require students to complete a practicum course in order to gain on-the-job training from a professional court reporter. Opportunities may be available with court reporting firms or freelance agencies. Depending on the program, students will have a minimum number of hours that need to be completed, and produce a certain number of pages of court-reporting transcription.

    Legal Terminology

    • A legal terminology course ensures that students have an understanding of the words and phrases used in the legal profession in order to transcribe them properly. In addition to defining legal terms, students learn about spellings and pronunciations as well. Certain words that are often misused or misspelled will be emphasized.
