Consequences of Cheating on a Test

Cheating on a scholarly level ranges from plagiarism, which is copying the published or unpublished work of another author, to stealing a project from another person, to buying answers for a test. Universities do not deal lightly with cheating, and many will institute anti-cheating policies complete with consequences for broken policies. Any student who aids in cheating, though he may not cheat on his own assignment, is also subject to punishment.
  1. Failing Grades

    • Students who are caught cheating on tests or assignments are more likely to receive an "F", or zero grade, on the assignment or in the class as a whole. Depending on the severity of the cheating, the professor may have the privilege, according to university rules, to fail the student for the full semester. If any students assist the cheating student, they could also be given a failing grade for the project or for the semester.

    Academic Probation

    • Academic probation means the student is placed on a period of close observation. The student is required to obtain high grades on further projects or in other classes. The probation is placed on the student by the university, and the student's work is scrutinized by every professor for plagiarism or other misleading information. If the student is caught cheating again while on academic probation, further, harsher consequences are instituted for the student. Students helping others cheat may also receive probation.

    School Suspension

    • Students who cheat or those who assist cheaters may be suspended from classes. The student and any accomplices are not allowed to attend classes for a predetermined amount of time. The university will make this decision through an interdisciplinary board. The student will be able to submit assignments at the professor's discretion; all participation points for the extent of the suspension are lost.

    School Expulsion

    • School expulsion is the end of the student's career at the current university. An expelled student will not be allowed to attend classes without reapplying to the school, and the expulsion will be reflected on the student's transcripts. Any student who is repeatedly found assisting others to cheat on assignments or tests may also be expelled at the discretion of the university disciplinary board.
