The Correct Format for Dates in APA

The American Psychological Association (APA) provides a method of citing sources both in a reference list and in in-text documentation. The APA style guide provides instruction on the proper use of APA citations. Unlike other styles of citation, APA references the date within the text as well as in the reference section.
  1. Parenthetical Citation

    • The date published is listed in the parenthetical citations. The author is listed first, followed by a comma and then the date. If the parenthetical citation is for a direct quote, the page number follows the date.

Author as Part of the Narrative

    • When you name the author of the piece you are referencing in the narrative, follow the name of the author with the date in parentheses. After you reference the date, continue your sentence.

Author and Date in the Narrative

    • While this is acceptable, it is not encouraged in APA formatting. You would reference the year and the author in the narrative of the sentence.

As Part of the Reference List

    • Citing the date in a reference citation requires that the date is listed in parentheses immediately after the period following the author or authors of the piece. If no author is listed, the date follows the period following the title of the piece in parentheses.
