How to Cite an Online Magazine Database

If you're writing a research paper, your professor will want to see where you got your information from, and that the sources you used to write your paper are properly attributed. Proper citation of sources is necessary to add validity to the content of your paper, and also gives the reader a reference where he can find more information on the subject. Two commonly used style manuals for research papers are MLA and APA. There are slight differences in citiation style depending on the manual you're using.

Instructions

  1. Citations Using MLA 7th Edition Style

    • 1

Cite the author of the article first. For example, you would write "Smith, Dan." If an author is not named, skip this step.

    • 2

Write the name of the article next, surrounded with quotation marks. It should read, "The History of Baseball."

    • 3

Include the name of the magazine next in italics, followed by the volume number and issue number, and the year in parentheses, followed by a colon. For this example, "Sports Digest, 6.2 (2010):".

    • 4

Add the page number or page range (use "N.pag." if you don't know the page number), followed by a period. For example, it should read, "110-115."

    • 5

List the name of the magazine database, italicizing it, the medium of the publication, and the date you accessed the article. For example, "EBSCOhost. Web. 18 Feb. 2011."

    • 6

Check your citation to make sure it is in this format: Smith, Dan. "The History of Baseball." Sports Digest (italicized), 6.2 (2010): 110-115. EBSCOhost (italicized). Web. 18 Feb. 2011.

Citations Using APA 6th Edition Style

    • 7

Cite the author of the article first, followed by a period. For example, you would write "Smith, Dan."

    • 8

Next, you would list the year of publication in parentheses, followed by a period. For this example, you would list "(2010)."

    • 9

Write the name of the article next, with no quotation marks, followed by a period: "The History of Baseball."

    • 10

Add the magazine title next, in italics, by a comma, then the volume number and issue number in parentheses, followed by another comma, and then the page number or range, followed by a period. For example, "Sports Digest, 6(2), 110-115."

    • 11

Check your citation to make sure it is in this format: Smith, Dan. (2010). The History of Baseball. Sports Digest (italicized), 6(2), 110-115. APA style does not require database information in citations, as the databases may change over time.
