How to Make a 10-Minute Presentation

You would be hard pressed to find someone who looks forward to a presentation, whether it's a requirement in your middle school social studies classroom, for a college course or given in front of colleagues at a conference or board room meeting. The key to making a ten minute presentation is being well prepared.

Instructions

    • 1

Clearly read any instructions given to you by your instructor on the parameters for the presentation. For example, if it is a group presentation, there may be a requirement that each group member speak at least two minutes during your ten minute presentation.

    • 2

Research your topic thoroughly. Whether you are presenting a proposal in a business setting or an educational one, make sure that the information you present is based on solid sources.

    • 3

Determine whether you are allowed to use supplementary materials during your presentation to assist you in keeping your audience's attention. These can also help you get your points across in your presentation. There are a variety of materials you may be allowed to use, such as charts and diagrams, handouts, video clips and various props, depending on your presentation's topic.

    • 4

Develop a basic outline for your presentation. You may have to make adjustments as you re-work your presentation so that it conforms to the amount of time you will have to present your topic.

    • 5

Practice giving your presentation several times or until you feel comfortable with the material. When possible, give a mock presentation in front of friends, family or colleagues. Time the presentation to ensure that it is ten minutes, or fairly close to ten minutes, in length.

    • 6

Catch your audience's attention early with a strong opening statement. Present your main points as concisely as possible. You should aim to make at least three points in your ten minute presentation. If it is a group presentation, assign one section to each group member to present and be prepared to answer questions, if there is a question and answer segment after your presentation is concluded.
