How to Properly Cite In-text Sources in an APA Research Paper

Citing references properly ensures that authors you quoted in writing your paper are given proper credit. It will also avoid plagiarism. The American Psychological Association developed a style of formatting research documents and references aimed at making them more readable while improving the readers' comprehension. This style of writing is known as APA style. References are briefly cited in text to direct readers to full details of the reference, which are included in the main reference list.

Instructions

    • 1

Include the references in a list at the end of the paper. Full citation of the work used will include the author name, date, title of the work, and additional information needed for the reader to find the exact title.

    • 2

Extract the last name of the author and the year of publication from the full citation to use in the text. For larger documents, note the page number used.

    • 3

Quote the work in the text that notifies the reader which reference you are referring to. One example would be "According to Angelo's 1937 study," and then finish the quote with the relevant information.

    • 4

Enclose the author's last name and date of the work in parentheses after the sentence referring to the work if you did not use a direct quotation. Close the citation with a period after the parenthesis. The use of the work will look like this: "Approximately 83% of all wild birds migrate south for the summer" (Angelo, 1937).

    • 5

If there are two authors, separate their names with an ampersand. For example, (George & Hayward, 2011). For three or more authors, use a comma between the names, and add an ampersand between the last two. For example, (George, Hayward, & King, 2011). When using a direct quote the reference will look like this: In a 2011 study conducted by George, Hayward & King, it was revealed, "obesity is on the rise in America."

    • 6

Include page numbers for direct quotes. Close the citation with a period. For example if you directly quoted the author in a statement included in a report, the citation should look like this: (Hauser, 2011, p.73). If using the in text citation in sentence form, it will resemble this: Hauser (2011) declared "Americans are spending more money on fast food" (p. 73).
