How to Write a Question in APA Style

Writing a question using the format of the American Psychological Association, or APA, is much easier than most people think. It is almost as simple as writing a grammatically correct, interrogative sentence -- one that asks a question -- that contains a subject, a verb and a question mark. Many professionals and scholars use APA style; college instructors often require students to use it for writing papers.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the subject, or who or what you are talking about. Write down the verb or action you are going to ask.

    • 2

Reverse the order of the subject and verb in a declarative sentence to write an interrogative sentence. Use the following example as a model: "You are" represents the subject and verb of a declarative sentence. Use the order "Are you" to create an interrogative sentence.

    • 3
      Don't forget the question mark.

Add an object or object phrase and a question mark. Use the following example as a reference: Add "going to the store?" as an object phrase with a question mark. Combine the verb, subject and object phrase ("Are you going to the store?") to create the final product.

    • 4
      Check your work.

Check your work for grammatical errors. Capitalize the first word of the sentence. Check for spelling errors. End with a question mark.

APA style calls for two spaces after punctuation marks that end sentences.

Use two spaces after punctuation marks, including question marks, at the end of a sentence.
