First Year Requirements for Miami Dade College

Miami Dade College consists of eight campuses in Miami-Dade County, Florida, that offer more than 300 programs of study. The college gives students the option of pursuing vocational, associate and bachelor's degrees. In addition to degree programs, Miami Dade College has continuing education programs, online classes, honor's classes and dual enrollment for high school students. First-year enrollment requirements depend on the program of study a student enters and whether a student is international.
  1. General Guidelines

    • The first step to enrolling at Miami Dade College is completing an online application or printing an application. The college website has separate applications for associate and bachelor's degree programs, international students and noncredit courses. Upon completion, the application is mailed to the admissions office to the campus where the applicant plans to attend classes. Miami Dade College assigns a student number when it receives applications, allowing new students register for classes. New students must submit ACT or SAT scores and complete high school transcripts. If they don't have test scores, the college offers a computerized placement test for English and mathematics. The college requires new students to meet with an adviser before registering for classes.

    Bachelor's Degree Requirements

    • Miami Dade College has an open enrollment policy for students studying for technical certificates and entering associate degree programs. Students applying for bachelor's degree programs, though, must meet stricter enrollment requirements. In addition to the general application, bachelor degree students must turn in a supplemental baccalaureate application. Applicants should have Associate of Arts degrees, earning a 2.5 GPA on accepted work, and meet the requirements outlined by each degree program. New students need to contact each department to learn about additional requirements for their programs.

    International Student Requirements

    • International students must submit an application designed for students from different countries. International students need to send confidential bank letters to the college as proof of financial resources; high school diplomas and certificates; a copy of their passport biological information page; transcripts from other colleges; English language placement test scores like TOEFL; and proof of health insurance. The application for international students provides a sample of what the bank letter should look like. The college's International Student Services Office supplies information about insurance policies.

    Dual-Enrollment Requirements

    • The dual-enrollment program allows high school students attending public and private schools in Miami Dade County, and home-schooled high school students, to begin taking college classes. Miami Dade College allows students to take classes toward associate and bachelor degrees, as well as technical certificates. Eligible students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and permission from parents, principals and school counselors. They have to pass the colleges basic assessment test or submit ACT or SAT scores and meet with a college dual enrollment coordinator. Upon acceptance, students have to maintain a C average in their college courses.
