When studying toward a degree in computer science, a basic understanding of programming is required. Although as a computer specialist, actual programming will not be part of your day-to-day duties, a basic knowledge of programming helps a specialist gain a more thorough insight into the overall workings of computers. You may take a course in general programming that gives an overall picture or learn actual programming languages themselves.
A comprehensive knowledge of computer operating systems is required to qualify as a computer specialist. Operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Mac OS will be encountered continuously as part of your work, and courses in computer science will teach the basics of all the common operating systems. Some classes may teach each system in more depth.
To be a computer specialist, you will need an in-depth knowledge of how networks and databases work. Most computers that will be encountered in the workplace will be part of a network, and the computer specialist will need to be able to resolve any problems that arise with connectivity between computers and with the wider networks themselves. Large databases will also be a feature of most workplace computers, and computer science degree courses will provide specialist knowledge in this area.
In addition to computer specific classes, most computer science courses require students to take one or more classes in general education fields. It is usual to require a basic knowledge of science and mathematics, but humanities subjects are often required as well, such as history, English language or literature. Some computer courses are part of business schools and will feature classes in business administration, finance, marketing, accounting and management.
