List the last name of the author and the page number in parentheses if you are citing modern drama. For example:
(O'Neill 42)
List the name of the play and the act, scene and lines quoted if you are citing classic drama that is numbered by line. Separate act numbers, scene numbers and line numbers with a period and one space. Place the citation in parentheses. For example:
(Macbeth 2. 2. 4-6)
It is also permissible to use Roman numerals for the act and scene numbers. In this case, use uppercase Roman numerals to designate the act and lowercase Roman numerals to denote the scene. For example:
(Macbeth II. ii. 4-6)
Position your citation before the concluding period in your quotation if it is a short quotation that is not separated from the text. For example:
In the play, John states that "the best revenge is foul play" (O'Neill 42).
If you are quoting a long conversation that is separated from the text, place the citation after the concluding period. For example:
JOHN. The best revenge is foul play.
JAMES. I would have to agree.
JOHN. Because of your history?
JAMES. Because of my history. (O'Neill 42)
