How to Cite a Landmark Preservation Report

A landmark preservation report is a report issued by a landmark commission. Such commissions are agencies of city, state or federal governments. They exist to protect and preserve sites deemed to have historical significance for a community. They promote cultural pride, stabilize and improve property values and enhance education and business. How you cite a report in an academic paper will depend on what style you are writing in and whether it's an in-text citation or in a reference page. This article outlines citations in APA format as it is one of the most commonly used.

Instructions

  1. Reference Section

    • 1

Obtain a copy of the report, whether hardcopy or from an Internet source. You will need to know when it was published, or in the event it wasn't published, the date it was created. You will also need to know who wrote it.

    • 2

List the name of the author first. Last name first, comma, first name or initials. If author is unknown, list the name of the government agency sponsoring the report. For example, New York City Landmark Preservation Commission.

    • 3

Cite the date of the report in parentheses. If only a year is available, cite that alone. End the date citation with a period.

    • 4

Cite the name of the report after the date. If there is a report number, include it within parentheses. Italicize this part of the citation, and end with a period.

    • 5

Cite place of publication if hardcopy and if there is a corporate or governmental agency publisher. Place will be City, State, followed by a colon. For example, New York City: New York Government Printing Office.

    • 6

Cite online resource if retrieved online, with the statement "Retrieved from". Leave a space after "from" and type the web URL beginning with the http prefix. Leave the URL reference open-ended, that is with no ending punctuation.

    In-Text Citation

    • 7

Cite the name of the author, if known, within the body of the text, followed by the year of report or publication in parentheses. For example, "Smith (2007) reported..." Also mention the name of the report for clarification. Use all the names of authors if there is more than one.

    • 8

Cite the name of the report in parentheses, italicized, with year. For example, "The report (New York's Historic Sites, 2007) stated..." The date should not be italicized. This is called a "parenthetical citation."

    • 9

Cite the report every time you mention it. Another way to cite it is: "The New York's Historic Sites report (2007) stated..." Subsequent parenthetical citations with more than one author may be cited as Smith et al. (2007).
