How to Tell What Student Loans You Have

A student loan is an option for paying for college expenses and is available through the government or private institutions. While private institutions often send a student loan statement on a monthly or quarterly basis, education loans from the U.S. Department of Education are accessible directly from the government site. Included on the site are the types of loans you currently have, your account balance and status. While subsidized student loans do not charge interest for the loan, unsubsidized student loans build interest until the loan is paid in full.

Review your loan types. The Federal Stafford loan is the most popular, according to Suze Orman, author of "The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke," and usually includes the option for deferment in the event you cannot begin to pay back your loan. Deferment delays the payment period, but accumulates interest if you took out an unsubsidized loan. Your account page lists all of the current loans that include Stafford, Perkins, Federal Insured Student, an Federal Supplemental Loans for Students. Specialized loans include Federal Nursing Student Loans, Loans for Disadvantaged Students, Health Professions Student Loans and Health Education Assistance Loans.
