Who rescues the narrator in The Pit and Pendulum?

The narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" is eventually rescued by the French General Lasalle, who enters the torture chamber during the final moments of the narrator's life and witnesses his near-execution by the pendulum.
