TOEFL-iBT Requirements for Physical Therapists

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants worldwide must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for certification if they wish to work or continue their educational study in English-speaking countries. Countries other than the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Canada (excluding the Quebec Province), Australia and the United Kingdom require this testing if training was done in another language, according to New Jersey's Department of Law and Public Safety. The TOEFL test can be taken in several ways, including an Internet format, called the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL-iBT).
  1. Certification

    • Take the TOEFL-iBT within two years of filing an application for licensure as a physical therapist. The test and certification cost $150 to $225, which also covers getting the test result reports. To register for the TOEFL-iBT over the Internet, create an online account with a user name and password.

    Examination

    • The TOEFL-iBT test scores are based on reading, listening, writing and speaking. Reading skills are tested by your ability to comprehend portions of academic texts. Listening skills are tested by listening to lectures and discussions. The writing section evaluates your grammar, vocabulary, paragraph development and accuracy in writing English. Speaking skills are rated by your English responses and delivery of a topic.

    Test Results

    • Applicants receive a total of 120 points, 30 points per test section. One test report will be sent to you and up to four reports can go to organizations or institutions of choice indicated on the online registration form. If you want more test reports, a fee of $17 is charged for each report, which will be available two weeks after the test date.
