What is a merit in gcse?

In the GCSE grading system, a merit is no longer used. The system used to have grades A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and U. Merit was sometimes used in vocational qualifications alongside other distinctions. Now, GCSEs are graded from 9 (highest) to 1 (lowest), with a U grade for unclassified.
