How to Teach Verbal SAT Preparation

The verbal section of the SAT, now called "Critical Reading," is designed to test a student's ability to read and understand English. There are two different types of questions: reading comprehension and sentence completion. Offering SAT preparation classes is one of the best ways to facilitate learning and prepare students for the test.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize students with the verbal section of the SAT by giving them examples of the types of questions that will be asked and how to answer them. Teach specific test-taking skills and strategies as they relate to this section. Also demonstrate how to mark answers on the test.

    • 2

Have students complete practice tests. When they run into unfamiliar words, have students jot them down to review later. If they have any questions about the formatting of the test, they can write the questions down to have them answered later.

    • 3

Prepare vocabulary flashcards based on your students' grade level and the SAT requirements. On one side of the flashcard, have students write a vocabulary word, and on the other side, have them write the definition. Your students should practice vocabulary every day.

    • 4

Give students daily sentence completion worksheets. Start out with simple worksheets and work up to harder ones.

    • 5

Prepare reading materials based on the SAT, and encourage students to read everything from fiction to nonfiction.
