Focus first on safety. When welding, students will need to wear proper safety gear, including thick gloves, face shield and long sleeves.
Demonstrate how to use each piece of equipment that will be used by the students when creating their own metal art. A welding torch is the main tool that will be used. Other tools include a drill press and milling machine.
Show the students how to solder. Solder is used to attach two pieces of metal. First, you will heat the connected metal pieces using the propane torch. Add the solder to the opposite side of the metal. It will pull around the two pieces and attach them together.
Add some history to your sculpture welding course. In addition to making art, you can teach your students about some famous metal artists, such as Henry Moore, Beverly Pepper or Richard Hunt. Show examples of each artist's work to help inspire your students.
Leave plenty of time in the course, at least several weeks, for your students to create their own metal art work using welding principles. Continue to emphasize safety and watch each student closely the first time they use a machine, including the welding torch. Correct any mistakes immediately.
