What Is a Concentric Geometric Shape?

Concentric geometric shapes are shapes that are contained within each other while maintaining the same common center. Although each of the individual shapes possesses unique edges, they all share the same point of origin. Concentric shapes can be made up of either different shapes or geometrically similar shapes.
  1. Features of a concentric shape

    • Concentric shapes do not maintain the same size. As each of the shapes approaches the center, its size reduces in relation to its layered position while still retaining the same origin. Concentric shapes can occur in different ways. The following are some of the common examples.

    Concentric Circles

    • This is easily one of the most common types of concentric geometric shapes. A good example of this is the target used when people play darts. Each of the concentric circles is spaced evenly with varying radii. However, despite the differences in their size, they still maintain the same center. The region between two concentric circles is known as the annulus. The concentric region of any two circles can be obtained by inversion.

    Concentric Circles and Squares

    • Concentric effects can also be achieved with different shapes. An example would be when a circle is placed inside a square or a square is contained within another square. The visual results of this arrangement can be very attractive. Wassily Kandinsky 1913 painting offers a good example of this rule.

    Other Concentric Shapes

    • There are other shapes that can be designed into concentric geometric shapes. Triangles and ovals can be used in creating concentric shapes. The key is to maintain the common center between all the shapes. For instance, a track field for athletics is made of concentric geometric shapes.
