How to Understand IQ Numbers

IQ testing began in 1904 when Frenchman Alfred Binet developed a method to distinguish between children who were academically normal and those who were inferior. This method eventually developed into the Binet Scale, also known as intelligence quotient (IQ) testing. Since 1916, IQ testing has been the standard intelligence test in the United States. Today, schools and psychologists use an IQ test to measure intellectual abilities against other people in a similar age group. These tests determine the amount of mental capacity or the severity of mental disability.

Compare your IQ to the list of occupations most common among certain IQ scores. Test scores of 90 are found primarily among laborers, upholsterers, factory packers, sorters, farmhands and gardeners. An IQ in the 100 range is often found among carpenters, bakers, cooks, truck drivers and warehouse workers, shopkeepers, welders, machine operators and sheet metal workers. Clerks, salespeople, law enforcement officers, foremen, telephone operators and electricians are occupations with test results of 110. An average IQ of 120 is the score for pharmacists, stenographers, school teachers, and managers. Lawyers, surgeons, physicians and engineers have an average score of 130, while professors, some civil servants and research scientists average scores of 140.
