What Kind of Math Is on the GED?

The General Equivalency Diploma (GED) has five different subjects that an individual must show competency in to pass. The mathematics portion of the exam covers subjects that a high school student learns during the four years of high school up to 12th grade. Before taking the GED, a student should ensure that she knows the basics of each type of math covered.
  1. Numbers and Operations

    • Number operations is the portion of the test that covers basic mathematical operations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It also touches base on percentages, fractions and decimals. You are permitted to use a calculator on this portion of the test.

    Measurement and Geometry

    • The questions in the measurement section focus on lines, angles, area, volume and the Pythagorean theorem knowledge. This section tests on traditional formulas for calculating area of a square, circle and rectangle, among others. It also tests on knowing how to calculate the volume of three-dimensional objects.

    Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability

    • Statistics and probability tests your knowledge of how to calculate the chances of an event happening, along with knowing how to calculate mean, median and mode.

    Algebra, Functions and Patterns

    • The algebra section tests your knowledge of solving basic algebraic equations involving variables. You will need to know the order of operations and how to solve linear equations, along with both quadratic and systems equations.
