The Differences Between AP & CLEP Exams

CLEP, which stands for "College Level Examination Program," is a series of tests that allows students to earn college credit through a qualifying score on any of 33 exams. AP stands for "Advanced Placement" and is a program that allows high school seniors to earn college credit through AP college level courses and exams. The AP and CLEP exams can both be beneficial for a student entering college; however, each exam serves a different purpose.
  1. CLEP Exams

    • The CLEP exams are designed to test students on material that would be taught and learned in an introductory college course. Therefore, it is imperative that students are proficient in their subject choice prior to registering for a CLEP exam. Proficiency can be gained through independent studies, on-the-job training, advanced courses or even cultural pursuits. As of March 2011, the CLEP exams can be taken year-round. The registration fee per examination is $77.

    AP Exams

    • AP exams are geared toward high school seniors who are interested in earning college credit while in high school. As of March 2011, there are 34 advanced placement courses to choose from. After completion of an AP course, students must contact their AP coordinator to register for the exam. All AP exams are scored from one to five, with five being the highest score possible. Most colleges will grant credit to students with a three or higher on an AP exam.

    Advantage of CLEP Exams

    • One of the biggest advantages of the CLEP exam is that exams are administered year-round. Preparation for the CLEP exams tend to be less rigorous since it is not required to take a year-long course to sit for the exam. The CLEP exam is also available to individuals beyond the high school level. Military personnel, for example, are eligible for funding assistance for CLEP exams through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), according to College Board.

    Advantage of AP Exams

    • One of the greatest advantages of the AP exam is the vast variety of courses available to choose from. These courses and exams range from Studio Art to Japanese Language and Culture. Students are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in a unique and interesting learning experience that not only provides the opportunity to earn college credit but also lets them stand out from other applicants during the college admissions process.
