How to Learn College Algebra Fast for the CLEP

Mastering a skill takes a lot of time, but often you don't have all the time you need for learning something important. Developing a plan can help you master difficult material more quickly than if you were able to work slowly and carefully. If you are on a tight deadline for learning college algebra that is required on the CLEP exam, try some of these basic techniques to get the grade you want at a quick pace.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand which college algebra skills will be tested on the CLEP test. According to the College Board, the mathematics portion of the CLEP exam focuses on sets, logic, the real number system, functions and their graphs, probability and statistics and additional topics from algebra and geometry.

    • 2

Determine which subjects you need the most help with and focus on those. Only go back to practicing the problems that are easier for you if you have time after studying the more difficult topics. Write the subjects that you need help with down on a piece of paper and check them off as you go.

    • 3

Purchase study books and download free practice exams if you do not have time to study with a tutor or participate in a CLEP test preparation class. These individual study tools will help you study and learn the mathematics topics at a pace that is comfortable for you.

    • 4

Dedicate at least 2 hours a day to study college algebra that will come up on the CLEP test. If you can, devote 8 hours to studying the mathematics. If you need to learn something quickly, you need to be willing to spend long hours mastering the material.

    • 5

Practice problems that will be similar to the ones on the test. You don't have to learn every aspect of college algebra to master the topics that will be covered on the CLEP test. Instead, practice only on the problems that you know are likely to appear by reviewing the practice problems on the College Board website. Although there are other excellent practice booklets that are not published by the College Board, because the College Board is the official creator of the CLEP test, their practice problems can help you determine the types of problems you will most likely see.
