How to Study for the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test)

The Medical College Admissions Test is one of the basic requirements for students applying to medical school. It contains four different sections that place emphasis on different subject areas important to the education of doctors, including a physical science section, a biological sciences section, a verbal reasoning section and a writing section. Students need to prepare for each of these sections in similar ways in order to ensure they achieve their personal best scores on the exam.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan ahead. Think of your undergraduate college courses as valuable study time for the MCAT exam you will need to take in order to apply to medical school. Ask for extra help from your professors to make sure you understand the material you are learning. Record detailed notes and store them in a safe place so you can use them while studying for the MCAT.

    • 2

Start early. The Indiana University Health and Prelaw Center encourages students to take a full-length MCAT practice test about one year to eight months prior to the date you are scheduled to take the exam. MCAT full-length practice tests are available on the Association of American Medical Colleges website, as well as in many practice booklets.

    • 3

Purchase and review practice booklets. The Association of American Medical Colleges offers a practice booklet called "The Official Guide to the MCAT Exam" which offers practice tests and sample problems directly from the creators of the test. Companies like the Princeton Review and Kaplan also offer practice booklets.

    • 4

Consider a preparation course or private tutoring. Some classes are designed for specific areas of the exam while others focus on the entire exam, allowing you to focus on the aspects of the MCAT that are the most challenging for you. You can take classes online if you are not located near a center that offers the classes.

    • 5

Focus on the areas of the test that are most difficult for you. While it is important to study and gain experience on each subject included on the MCAT test, you should spend the most time with the material you are least familiar with. This will help ensure that you do your best in even your weakest subject areas.
