How to Increase Your Physical Science Score on the MCAT

For future physicians, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is one of the most important examinations of their lives. This standardized test quizzes students on a variety of subjects to assess their competency in areas that are deemed important for success in medical school. Physical sciences is the first section of the MCAT and consists of 77 multiple choice questions focusing on chemistry and physics. While this challenging test may be extremely difficult, even for the brightest, most hardworking students, there are ways to increase and improve your physical science score.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a practice MCAT exam from a book or online. Familiarize yourself with the format of the physical science section and its questions. Even test-takers who have mastered the content can still do poorly if they are unfamiliar with the way the questions are asked.

    • 2

Review your notes from relevant classes, such as physics and chemistry. Setting aside an hour a night to looking over your notes and studying the material will help keep the information fresh in your mind for when you take the MCAT.

    • 3

Enroll in an MCAT prep class. A preparatory class will help you improve your overall test-taking ability and, in turn, boost your physical science score.

    • 4

Hire a tutor. One-on-one sessions with a tutor lets you focus on your weaker areas and allows you to get the help you need to better understand physical sciences.

    • 5

Teach others. Teaching other students is a great way to learn and master the material yourself. Offering to tutor high school physics or chemistry students is a great way to keep using the material that will be featured on the MCAT, ensuring that you know it inside and out.

    • 6

Reflect on your test-taking in the past. Focus on any weakness you may have. For instance, if you found questions about a certain chemistry topic especially challenging, focus your studying, tutoring or other attention on that.
