Ohio's Department of Transportation and Public Safety consists of two separate agencies: the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Together, these agencies are responsible for developing and maintaining the state's transportation system, as well as ensuring the safety of Ohioans on the road.
The Ohio Department of Transportation
- is responsible for planning, building, and maintaining Ohio's highways and bridges.
- oversees 174,000 miles of state highway, approximately 12,500 bridges and 206 airports.
- partners with local governments and other transportation providers to coordinate transportation improvements that meet the needs of the state.
The Ohio Department of Public Safety
- is responsible for promoting safety on Ohio's roads and waterways.
- includes divisions such as the State Highway Patrol, Motor Vehicle Registration, and Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
- works to reduce traffic fatalities, crashes and injuries, and enforces Ohio's traffic laws.
