Help children understand scientific terms such as the following: observe, classify information, predict results and organize. Explain to children what these words mean in a scientific context. For young kids, also teach the concept of patterning.
Look at your local science curriculum. Find out the content local school teach so that you are teaching kids what they need to learn. Talk to a science teacher about how to help students most.
Build self-esteem in the child. You want to find out their strengths and build on the good first. Once you find out what they are good at, focus on what confuses them. Together you can work on solutions to any problem areas.
Teach them to measure and analyze data. Explain causation: variable A causes variable B. You can give a more complicated explanation for older students. For example, explain that variable A does not always cause variable B because correlation does not equal causation.
Explain the difference between independent and dependent variables. The first one stands alone but the second one means it depends on something else.
Talk about estimation. Then ask the child questions and chart the answers. Ask them if they were you right at the end. Use science experiments and demonstrations to teach science. Do things together. Ask students to explain what they see and to make inferences and guesses. Make graphs to represent findings.
Ask children lots of questions. You want to make them think. Teach reasoning skills, problem solving skills, writing skills and math skills. All of these skills are used in science.
