Tutor Counseling Techniques

Tutoring people helps them to learn while reviewing and asking questions at their own rate. Tutoring involves more than just teaching; it also involves listening to the needs of the person you're tutoring to help the best you can.
  1. Asking Questions

    • Asking questions of the student will allow the tutor to reinforce what they are teaching. This teaches the student to think about and solve problems. Questions that ask for open-ended responses -- i.e., not a "yes" or "no" answer -- can assist students in determining the cause of the problem and how to solve it. Rephrasing questions helps the student to think about other aspects of the lesson. You can reword your question or break it up into smaller sections so the student can understand the question completely.

    Listening

    • When you listen to students, it is important to listen carefully to understand what they are telling you. If they are not understanding the lesson or if it takes them awhile to explain the lesson to you, you can help them figure out which areas they need improvement. Students can tell you exactly what they need help on, allowing you to focus on the improvements needed.

    Summarizing

    • Summarizing allows students to review what you have gone over. This helps prevent them from forgetting any of the material and also allows them to ask questions on specific areas they might not understand fully. Having students say their steps in their own words to see how well they understood the lesson allows the tutor to decide whether or not to proceed to the next lesson or stay on the current lesson.

Allow The Student To Do The Work

    • Allowing the students to do the work gives them a chance to work independently and try the skills you have taught them. You can give the student the pencil and allow him or her to take control of the lesson. You can review with the student the mistakes that are made, how to fix them and also prevent them.
