Instructions

    • 1
Write scheduled sessions on a calendar.

Speak with the student's parents. Have a list of questions prepared to gather information. Ask them about the student's progress and find out what their goals are. Tell them your fee for the service and when you expect payment. Create a schedule for tutoring sessions.

    • 2
      Call the teacher.

Contact the student's teacher and establish communication through email, phone or a meeting at school. Set a schedule for regular consultations. A teacher's input solidifies the needs of the student.

    • 3
      Get to know your student.

Establish a professional and personal relationship with the student at the first session. Ask them about Spanish class to determine the student's difficulties and goals. Ask to see their text, notebook, quizzes and tests. Discuss life outside of the classroom and show interest in hobbies, sports, friendships and family.

    • 4
      Organize materials.

Communicate expectations for the student. Tell them to bring their textbook, notebook and any other materials to the session. Spanish 1 entails learning vocabulary and basic sentence structure, so be sure the student has a system of flash cards for study purposes.

    • 5
      Find reinforcements.

Show the student how to reinforce Spanish skills at home. Ask them for ideas. Create a list of online resources. Program electronic devices to use Spanish. Enlist the student's help in determining reinforcement.

    • 6
      Reward success.

Continue to monitor the student's progress, the parents' expectations and the teacher's outlook. Adjust the focus of the tutoring session accordingly. Positive reinforcement is an established motivator, so applaud a student's efforts and achievements.
