Ideas for Teaching TEFL Class With Limited Resources

Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or TEFL, is a course offered all over the world. Also known as ESL, or English as a Second Language, and ELL, or English Language Learners, TEFL courses are taught in many U.S. public schools. Some courses are taught in larger, private facilities. But many classes are offered in smaller, rural areas with few resources. Tutors travel to foreign countries to teach English to children and adults who wish to travel, study or work in an English-speaking country.
  1. Stories

    • Both children and adults enjoy folktales. Talk to local librarians or teachers and learn a familiar local story or folktale. Translate the local folktale into English. A familiar story is easier for language learners to understand. Follow up with questions about the story, asking for the answers in English. Since the story should be familiar to the students, they can concentrate on the English translation.

    Pictionary

    • Use the game "Pictionary" to teach action phrases and English verb tenses. Create a series of cards containing simple action phrases. Choose a student to draw a picture of an action represented by the phrase on a card. Help the student read the phrase in English if necessary. The student then draws the picture for the rest of the class, and they must guess the phrase based on the picture. Give an extra point if a student uses the proper verb tense when answering. For example, a student would get a point for decoding the picture as "cowboy ride horse," but would get an extra point for saying, "He is riding the horse."

    Rules

    • Split the class into groups of three or four students. Give each group a situation. Each group must create a list of things that they must and must not do in that situation. The situations can be as serious or as silly as you wish, and the rules can be just as varied. Set a time limit for the groups to write down their rules. Ask each group to share their rules with the rest of the class. Award a point for every properly formed sentence. The group with the most points wins. Offer a consolation prize for the group with the funniest rules.

    Create Multi-Level Class

    • Students sometimes learn as much from each other as they do from the teacher. Creating a classroom with a wide variety of language levels helps all students. Those students who are new to the English language have a wide variety of examples before them. They have the ability to work one-on-one with a fellow student who is more adept at English. Working with a new student gives the more proficient student a level of confidence in English. It also frees the teacher to evaluate them both.
