It is important to know where your students come from. You can study the student's background and the culture he belongs to by researching over the Internet. Or even better, you can talk to the student in private and ask him about his country, original background and about the teaching methods used where he came from. This way you can implement these methods with modifications to make the student feel somewhat at home and to let him know you care about his learning.
Individualized interaction for such students proves to be a milestone in their learning process. During class activities, you can go up to the student, and ask him politely if he understands whatever is being taught in the class. Children love special attention and it helps them develop self-confidence and enhance their learning skills. Arrange students to get intensive help learning English, through conversations and interactive class activities.
Make sure the student participates in all class activities along with her peer students. Make groups in the class for activities and be a part of a group with her. Having the teacher in her group will boost her confidence. You can organize activities such as debates and lively group discussions and make the student be part of it by asking him her opinions on the topic under discussion.
During the lectures, speak clearly with gestures and keep looking at the student to make sure he is paying attention and understands at least some of it. Teachers can also take help of visual aid such as pictures, charts and graphs to teach vocabulary context. Focusing your attention on key vocabulary words can help the student learn English sooner and better. You can also tell stories with pictorial descriptions to enhance sentence structure development in the students.
Teaching students who don't speak English requires a lot of effort and patience on the side of the teacher. Don't expect the student to understand and learn everything in one go, because that is not humanly possible. The learning process takes a lot of time, especially when it is in a whole new language and system. Keep motivating and encouraging the student towards understanding the language so she doesn't get frustrated due to all the pressure.
