Ideas for Teaching Nouns

Students learn faster when they are engaged in a process of interactive learning. Grammar is taught with different techniques that engage the student in the learning process. Nouns are typically taught first. Other parts of speech are introduced once students have a firm grasp on the concept of a noun.
  1. Use Visual Aids

    • Pass out pictures of various scenes, such as a person walking in a city or riding the train. Provide the class with the definition of a noun. Ask the students to list objects in the pictures that they identify as nouns.

    Use Interactive Demonstrations

    • Review the concept of a noun phrase. Label cards with the words "noun," "adjective," "article" and "modifier" on them and hand out one of each card to students. Ask four students to come to the front of the class and arrange themselves in the order of a noun phrase. This provides students with a visual representation of the noun phrase.

    Use Repetition and Positive Reinforcement

    • Read out a sentence to your students. Ask students to identify the nouns in the sentence. Praise students who correctly identify all the nouns in the sentence. Read out a different sentence and ask other students to identify the nouns. Keep reading out sentences until most of the class has participated.

Connect Meaning to the Part of Speech

    • Talk about how some words represent different parts of speech, depending on the context. As an example, the word "fly" refers to either flying or a bug. Ask students to come up with other words that are nouns as well as other parts of speech.
