What is phonetics?

Phonetics is the scientific study of speech sounds. It's concerned with the physical properties of speech sounds, how they are produced (articulatory phonetics), how they are transmitted (acoustic phonetics), and how they are perceived (auditory phonetics). It's different from phonology, which studies how sounds function in a language system to create meaning. Phonetics focuses on the sounds themselves, regardless of their linguistic context.
