What does the axe that billy used to kill lion in Where Red Fern Grows mean?

There is no mention of Billy using an axe or killing a lion in the novel "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls. The main character, Billy Coleman, owns and uses two hound dogs named Old Dan and Little Ann to hunt raccoons and other small game in the Ozark Mountains.
