Why is a potato called potato?

The term "potato" is derived from the Spanish word "patata", which itself comes from the Taíno Native American language of the Caribbean, specifically from the word "batata". When Spanish explorers first encountered potatoes in the Americas, they adopted the Taíno name and introduced the vegetable to Europe under that name. Over time, the word "patata" evolved into its current form, "potato".
